A producer on the Joss Whedon Firefly TV series hypothetically talks what could be next for the series that has seen it's fanbase grow from only one short season to be able to sustain an audience for a solo spinoff movie.

Firefly aired on Fox for one season back in 2002. It was created by Joss Whedon and had Tim Minear on as executive producer.

Following its cancelation, fans created petitions and online forums and websites in support of their favorite space western.

Serenity followed in 2005 and saw the return of fan-favorite actors and characters such as Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm Reynolds, Gina Torres as Zoe, Alan Tudyk as Wash, Morena Baccarin as Inara, Adam Baldwin as Jayne, Jewel Staite as Kaylee, Sean Maher as Simon, Summer Glau as River and Ron Glass as Shepard.

Throughout the years there has been talk of a revival as Firefly has appeared at various conventions and in documentaries.

While last we heard from Joss Whedon is that he would rather do new projects, Tim Minear participates in a "what if" with Entertainment Weekly.

Minear says if they would ever bring back Firefly, it would probably be as a limited series.

I would never foreclose the possibility. The fact that it was even a feature film after it spectacularly failed on Fox was a miracle. And of course it lives on in other forms.

I think a limited series of some kind would work best. Something like that could also work if, say, 20th could partner with Netflix, or another distributor. It would have its home on Fox, of course [then a second window on streaming]. A limited series would do very well, I bet.

Let's not get our hopes up, however, as Minear does state bringing back Firefly would be a long shot.

In terms of getting the band back together to make a new adventure, who knows? I would love it. It would be great. But first everybody has their respective projects that limits them from crossing over into other things. It’s just trying to coordinate everybody’s obligations so they could somehow participate.

Maybe one day we'll get Firefly back...

Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me
Take me out to the black
Tell them I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me
There's no place I can be
Since I found Serenity
But you can't take the sky from me...
