At the recent Toronto Film Festival, The Avengers director Joss Whedon not only spoke about James Gunn and the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but also the new upcoming ABC S.H.I.E.L.D television series.
As we heard previously, the S.H.I.E.L.D series will feature new characters, ones that were not featured in The Avengers movie. Now, Joss Whedon gives MTV News an update in that he has the "full cast" and "framework" ready as well, and again mentions new characters.
"It's new characters. It needs to be its own thing," Whedon told MTV about S.H.I.E.L.D. "It needs to be adjacent [to the MCU] but you don't want to do a show where you're constantly going, 'Iron Man just left, but he was totally here a minute ago.' You want them to do their own thing."
As MTV questioned, just what exactly is "their own thing?" Well, it seems the major difference between The Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. will be super powers, in that the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D have none (with examples being Agent Phil Coulson and Maria Hill).
" 'Well, what does S.H.I.E.L.D. have that the other superheroes don't? And that, to me, is that they're not superheroes," Whedon stated. "But they live in that universe. Even though they're a big organization, that [lack of powers] makes them underdogs, and that's interesting to me."
Our pick to appear? S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Wendell Vaughn.
The Avengers movie assembles May 4th, 2012 and is directed by Joss Whedon, starring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.
