With episode 4, "Eye-Spy," Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. is now batting .500! Not bad!
After the first two episodes were about as good in quality as the current issues of Marvel Comics' Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova, the following two episodes have proved the series is worth watching.
"Eye-Spy" sees the team take on a rogue S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who may or may not have special precognition powers as she seems to know things that no one should know. Akela Amedor (Pascale Armand) happens to be a former protege of Agent Coulson, but things went wrong on a mission with her teaming getting totally wiped out and Amedor captured.
The episode starts off with those enigmatic red-masked men who seem like they belong in an episode of Doctor Who. They are all wearing the same clothes, masks and each have a briefcase handcuffed to their hand. They make their way onto a subway where we then see Amedor joins them. The power goes out! We hear some noise! Lights are back on and all the red-masked men have been taken out! Then the camera pans to the floor where we see a bloody mess as Amedor has apparently cut off the hand of one of the men to grab the briefcase. Inside? A bunch of diamonds?!
Turns out the masked men were nothing more than a decoy as only one briefcase actually contained the diamonds. Then how did Amedor know which one? Skye puts out the possibility she could be a precog, with Agent May not buying it (wow, is she ever crabby!). The team uses some tech where it's mentioned SHIELD's job gets easier by the day as people are spying on themselves through the social networks by posting information and images constantly (nice touch!). They search through and find an image of Amedor, with Coulson instantly recognizing her. He wants to bring her in to "save" her, but May is against that and thinks Amedor should be taken out.
The team then heads out to track her down, but comes across a a weird signal - some kind of interference. As they attempt a trace - SMASH! Amedor takes out their van, which gets the team rattled, and she escapes. Back at the plane, the team manages to trace the source of the signal where it's discovered what the real source of Amedor's power is - it's her eye! It's learned that Amedor has some kind of bionic eye(s). Turns out she is not really a rogue agent, but Amedor is being controlled by a handler who is using her eye to give her specific messages and missions. If Amedor doesn't follow the directions there is a control safe inside her eye, which will kill her. Coulson is eager to help.
The SHIELD team tracks Amedor to a hotel room where Agent May confronts her. They ended up battling where we see Amedor uses X-Ray tech in her eye to see in the dark. Amedor is about to shoot May when Coulson blasts her with some new kind of stun gun.
Amedor awakens with Coulson there to calm her and tell her everything is going to be alright, etc. They have copied the signal and duplicated it with a pair of glasses that Agent Ward is now wearing. Fitz and Hugh are going to perform an operation to take out the device in her eye (did they operate on the correct eye??). Coulson questions Amedor about her handler. Amedor doesn't offer much, but has learned a little. She tells Coulson after her team was taken out, she was captured and imprisoned for four years. Then somebody freed her, which she initially thought was SHIELD, but wasn't. They gave her an operation and new eyes (as she was blinded in the battle that saw her captured). She says she was grateful but quickly learned the price she really paid. Coulson goes to hunt down the handler with Ward off to take over for Amedor on her next mission with Skye's help.
Ward heads to the factory where he has to pass through a series of check points. He does, and when he comes to a guard a directive is sent for him (Amedor) to seduce the guard. Well, that's not going to happen, so Ward attempts to smooth over the guard, but to no effect, so ends up knocking him out. Inside the next room are two men constantly typing on keyboards with strange equations written on boards on the walls of the room. Ward looks them over, and then we see the handler takes a picture of one of the boards through the eye and sends another message: "Mission Accomplished. Good Luck." Turns out the reason to seduce the security guard is because he has to enter a password every ten minutes or so. Now that the guard is knocked out, the alarm goes off with Ward on the run.
Fitz and Hugh are shown working on Amedor's eye. Hugh manages to take out the eyeball, when Fitz has to take over because of the tech. The device is implanted inside the eyeball, which could be a poison or a bomb. Switch to Ward who is attempting his escape when he passes a mirror. The handler now knows he has been deceived and activates the fail safe. Fitz then cuts the eye out just in time and saves Amedor.
Meanwhile, Coulson has been tracking down the handler and confronts him out in the open. Coulson flashes his badge with the handler in shock. The handler then collapses as we see his eye change! The handler was being controlled, too!
The wrap up sees Amedor getting taken away heading for trial for her crimes. Coulson tells her he will testify for her etc. Amedor then remarks to Agent May asking what happened to Coulson. May tells her about the Battle of New York. Amedor then says that is not what she means and asks "what did they do to him" and then says nothing more and walks away. May looks puzzled.
There was also a short humorous moment shown with Fitz and Ward playing poker. Skye was going to help Fitz cheat by using the X-Ray tech, but she tells Fitz if she uses it she will be able to see him through his clothes, in which Fitz changes his mind and leaves the table. Ward is shown looking baffled, when it cuts to Skye who uses the tech anyway and checks out Ward.
It's also revealed that the equations in the room possibly could be alien.
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 4 "Eye-Spy" featured a quality story and some cool twists; Pascale Armand was the perfect rogue agent; we learned about a possible new villains group more powerful than SHIELD (AIM? Hydra?); more was teased about what happened to Coulson, and perhaps best of all, none of the cast came off as annoying. Let's hope this continues!
