Body

1546 “Welcome to the Kree Empire” picks up on Carol Danvers and Mar-Vell threads from a previous episode last season which featured a strange version of the famed Kree captain as blue-skinned, working for Yon-Rogg and sporting a version of his old-time Gene Colan-designed uniform.

This time around, the Kree send an envoy ship which has Yon-Rogg, Mar-Vell (old duds) and Ronan the Accuser. Only Big R is not here to accuse but make judgment on behalf of the Supreme Intelligence: Earth will either join the Kree Empire -- or die!

The action starts on S.W.O.R.D.’s satellite as the still-obnoxious Henry Peter Gyrich pays an inspection visit. Carol, it seems, is working there and has also named her new self “Ms. Marvel,” after the Kree captain that saved her life last time ”˜round.

Agent Brand is also on board and there are some great moments with the stiff Gyrich and the no-nonsense Brand who reveals herself to be an alien here. (So the green hair was not a tell-all?)

Some of our Assemblers are seeking out the Serpent Society, so it is Captain America, Iron Man and the Hulk up against the Kree forces. Ronan and the Hulk have a great visual bout as do Carol and the Accuser. There are also some character minutes with Carol and Mar-Vell that fans of the Captain’s pre-Jim Starlin days will enjoy.

While the idea of this group working together sometimes does not jibe for me, I do appreciate the continuity in its storylines, something the books from the House of Ideas seem to be losing along with narrative captions, editor’s notes, letters pages and other fun things like that which made Marvel so different and enjoyable.

So, to sum up: Hulk smash, Kree flee and the Avengers get a new member. Oh! And look out for that shocker ending. Really!

Quite a Sunday morning!
